CHINA BOUND

November 23rd 2012:

Via Chicago, Hong Kong (over the Arctic) and on to Shanghai.

Oh sure, this flight leaves the US almost every day, but with enough fuel for 15.5 hours non stop flying time (Chicago-Hong Kong), it's a very long roll for take off - extra nail biting may be required...

UA895 is one of the longest commercial flights - and almost the heaviest - a 747 burns up far more fuel than an A380 mile for mile, despite being physically smaller, yet cramming almost as many earthlings in. I will be in economy of course, with the rest of the flying poor, so think of chickens on a Mexican bus and you will have the ambiance down perfectly. A 747 is noisier than a clapped out Latino bus... the food is crappier, it holds even more people with their over sized bags, there's no USB for my iPod... think of the radiation exposure...

OH MY GAWD GET ME OFF THIS RUSTING ANTIQUE!

Come back and see what Shanghai has to offer Dave as he tries to get as much in as he can. It is a long weekend that grew into a week - it's SHANGHAI WEEK!

GEEK STUFF:

The most direct route from Chicago is shown on the GCR map above, note the orientation, it's looking down from the pole... the path varies according to the weather and the wind - and I am hoping for a slight deviation. We will see how it works out :) - I want to go over the pole. This isn't the longest non-stop I have been on (the now defunct Bangkok to Los Angeles run at 16 hours is my personal record) - but I will be sleeping for most of it, so I guess it's academic :)

Flight plan time can vary by up to an hour ~ scheduled 15.25 hours. Speed, altitude, computed position, it's all here! How exciting! You can watch a lousy graphic move in 'real time' ;)

These posts will be submitted via email as the Great Firewall of China has blocked direct access to Blogger. You will have to forgive typos as I won't be able to see the site. Apparently the Chinese hate Google as much as Apple. You don't have to wear your Shanghai Tang Mao Suit to read along, but you can if you want. I am judgemental - but I won't be able to see you!

Under the circumstances, Little Red Books are optional.

See you soon.
