Full Day Shanghai

So my day began with a rather nice breakfast - for the money paid this is a pretty good hotel I think - which is weird for an Accor - my experiences with them to now have been iffy, but I am cheap when it comes to hotels, I want it all for little money and this one nears that lofty goal... Outside is the Rail Station, and the optical market is next door, ground floor full of camera and lens shops, second floor second hand cameras, third floor make up and lights and those above optical shops. The 25 dollar glasses are bad frames and simple prescriptions, my prescription is complex, so one pair progressives with titanium frame, one pair prescription sunglasses polarized, one pair readers with nikon frames set me back $350. Not a bad price, but not the huge savings I hoped for... oh well, was fun, pick them up later this week. This is a good place to see people just in 'from the sticks' - they come to the big city from the country - you can tell by clothes and baggage, and this is where they stare at white people - yes, I did just land on a space ship... yes, look much harder and I will laser you with my ray gun...
I was a little late getting going today because United Airlines saga still isn't done quite yet, sure they fly me to Calgary Dec 1st, but the ticket onward from there is dated the day before... you have to laugh, they are chaotic! When you speak to them, they never seem surprised... my tranquilizers are now worn off, so I can be more objective in looking at the saga... it's still a waste of time to fix though.
People's Square is a central point, the unique Shanghai Museum is below. Two young girls asked me to take their picture here, said they were from Xian then launched into "we are going to a tea ceremony, want to come with us?" Which is one of the biggest scams in Shanghai. The tea ends up costing lots and thugs appear making you pay apparently so I am thinking best not to go :) They really need cuter girls on this con if they want it to work though - these two look like they had been at the crystal meth for a while. Yes, I am fully aware what I look like in the mirror, but I am not trying to lure people into expensive tea ceremonies thanks very much.
But David is too clever for all these con men and women, there are plenty just as Damiao had warned. Actually on this one single day I was offered everything from fake watches to sex, more than once, one guy wanted to learn English, the girls with their tea con, I guess I have "stupid tourist" written all over me. I did buy a funny small kite from a woman who was very nice and I felt sorry for her, and a man selling funny rubber things you throw on the ground, they go splat then regain their shape... as I said "Stupid Tourist" written all over.
Nanjing East, above, is a pedestrian only shopping mall basically, with trolley cars for tours, so much for pedestrians only. Just off Nanjing though and it looks more normal for Shanghai.
The Apple store is packed with Monday morning shoppers...
This is taken from "The Bund" - a stretch of old Shanghai that in the 1920's was the Havana of the East. Now full of swank bars, banks and tony restaurants. They all have this view, the new Shanghai - Pudong. The building with the carry handle on top is where I am aiming for, but the haze is awful... there's an observation deck on that handled building, 100 floors up, and it may not be worth it if the haze doesn't shift.
This little bend in the Huangpu river is now probably the most iconic image of Shanghai.
On the ferry that goes over to the other side, I noted to two Australians how their is little excrement on the sidewalks from dogs. I only saw one pet pooch. The male half of the Australian couple suggested they have all been eaten, which seems a little harsh, but his other half, well she laughed. On the subway they had cute clips of kittens playing on the video screens... do Shanghainese like pets? I see none downtown, but millions of apartments.
Below is the The Bund. The high today was 15C. That must be cold for here as they are all wearing 'puffy' coats, the in thing. They would be cool, except they are all very shiny. The ones in Uni Qlo, roll up into tiny bags to store... not sure they are up to a central Canada winter, but what the hey. Everyone here thinks they are in the deepest winter weather.
This is the handled building, a financial centre building with expensive mall attached.
J-Life is the Taipei 101 ripoff design and they are building another huge monstrosity right next door. Pudong is all new buildings, which is interesting but sad, where is old Shanghai? When I went to get a ticket for the observation deck, they said it was poor visibility, so maybe I will return another day.
Oriental Pearl Tower is below, a very odd looking tower really -  but a landmark in Pudong. An Apple store right next door as well as many McDonald's, Starbucks, KFC-Pizza Huts - there are a lot here. I will confess I ate at McDonald's for very late lunch today, no idea of the time, really wanted the coffee, the chicken filet burger was quite awful - even for McD's.
The sun sets early, and like an idiot, right after sunset I took the subway home - the subway was PACKED, so much so, I thought I wouldn't get out of the car at my station - they all pile in and push, no manners here it seems - it's all me, me, me and anything left over, well you can guess who gets it. That of course clashes with the concept of Asian Grace and Propriety, in modern Shanghai, I think it's dead. I will go out in a bit to eat when the traffic dies - in the mean time I am doing this...
Apart from all the real estate and shops, there is still life in the Huangpu River, and the sunset, tamed by the humidity and smog, made for an interesting contrast with the communist party red star over The Bund.
Huge barges toodle up this river carrying who knows what - no doubt all fuel for the massive manufacturing of this country... look at all this concrete, thank you Wal-Mart!

The lights come on over Pudong:
And The Bund:
Asia wouldn't be Asia without the multi colour LED lamp, and there seems to be no shame in how they are used... Kitch or eye sore? As I get older, I find them more offensive somehow.
I am not sure why the Oriental Pearl Tower wasn't lit up... seems rather dark. But the haze is still there.
And here is Nanjing East at night: Nanjing West reminds me or Orchard Road. Shanghai captures a little bit of Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong in it's reach to re-invent itself...
Back at the Grand Mercure, this is my little room. I like it. The boxes of garbage bags - duly inspected by the US TSA on the way over - are for Damiao and his wife, I am not insane bringing Costco-Kirkland products back to China.
Neat, huh?
Well that is first night and first day in Shanghai. Jade temple tomorrow and some planning to get out of the city for a bit! Have a great day in - 20 or whatever, brrrrr, +15 is sooo cold...

Finally Here!

Resigned to my fate to fly United again today...sigh.. off I go, towards Europe... Europe?
North over Canada and Baffin bay, nothing to see out the window now, as it's night up here all the time, it is pitch black. The green line is the shortest path, which we deviate from a bit. Not sure why they are not going straight north today.
The map is funny of course because it's not round, scooting over the top of the planet shows like we are flying over Europe, which we sort of are, but the flat map is very deceiving.
Cold and Chilly Greenland and Arctic.

Dropping down in to the Russian far East. Murmansk and Arkhangel are infamous cold war ports.
The coldest temp see up there was -102F and I missed it on the screen. It fluctuated a bit all the time.
-93F is -70C. it is a bit colder than the usual at 35000 ft.
As we come down over Russia we pass Utaar Balaan and Mongolia, the restive western muslim areas of China to the right hand side then down the coast over Beijing. Flying this far north the world looks small, in the pic below we are equidistant from New Delhi or Northern Australia.
The flight path on the screen below is green, not quite as close to the pole I hoped, but not sure if winds were bad or what. The dotted line is the straightest line there on the curved surface of earth - we flew an extra 500 or so miles getting here today - but the plane made it in just under 14 hours. We are almost at the same latitude as Dubai, but it's not as hot... how come?
 The wonders of science...

At last on the ground in Shanghai and Damiao met me at the airport, what a nice guy! This is the Maglev station.
The magnetic levitation train runs up to 430kmh, but it's raining, so only 300kmh today... :( Very smooth though, no idea you are going so fast.

In town the hotel was not bad at all, we just dropped the bags and ran, Damiao gave me a quick tour of where things are, then food, food, from Macau Portuguese custard tarts, (yummy) to the steam bun place we ate at below, all very good. Some of the dumpling had my famous ABM mushrooms inside! Yay! Before anyone asks, I was using antiseptic wipes in hotels before CBC had their horror story, so yes, all is wiped...phew!
Damiao trying to avoid the pic, lol. Hopefully will meet his wife too for dinner Tuesday night. Walking around, I already bought an LED flashlight for 5 dollars. It has begun! In one market a woman grabbed me by the arm and literally tried to drag me in the shop, but it's not a shopping day!
This is more like Shanghainese food says Damiao - and look how there's not a deep fried chicken ball with sweet and sour sauce in sight... It is cooler hereof late, highs of only 15C all week, so I bought a fleece at Uni Qlo - the Japnese version of the GAP. I always go there before leaving Tokyo.
By People's Square Metro entrance: I am going to bed as I am worn out, Damiao had some work to do for his class tomorrow so he is gone too. The weather forecast is sketchy for the week sadly, Friday may be a rainy day so I will likely venture out of town. As part of the deal with United, my trip now ends December 1st - they were originally asking me to fly out Nov 25th, which meant arrival Nov 27th, which would not have given me much time at all in China - so I had them extend the ticket a day (and they ate the cost) - as they had put me in a funny position. So now I arrived on Nov 25th and leave on Dec 1st after all is said and done.
Big day tomorrow, All Day Shanghai! I cannot wait! it's 4 in the morning right now though, so as you can see, I cannot sleep!  :)

Spent the Night in New York

Like a teary Bieber at a talent show, feeling beaten by the world around him, I am within sight of Manhattan (you can see it from the airport) but I am at the Courtyard Marriot at Newark Liberty Airport instead, a little worn out. Friday night theatre or nightclubbing in the "city that never sleeps" ? Well Newark airport sleeps, it shuts down at midnight and everyone out. David is not venturing into town either...

Yesterday was a small disaster, all because that one plane did not show up in Regina to go direct to Chicago. That said, the phone calls that ensued tell you a lot about business in today's world... one agent told me my current set of flights, which will get me into Shanghai about 14.5 hours late, would get me there earlier than the ones missed in Chicago. Absolute Bunkum I cried! And I proceeded to count them through it. Most of the agents have no clue what the world looks like, one agent said I could drive to Calgary in an hour from Regina, I asked them if it was in a rocket car of some type, and I had to get to Asia for more connections to get to Shanghai, so saying get me to Hong Kong, Tokyo or Beijing seemed to baffle them completely. Everyone can make mistakes - but the agent books people onto planes for a living.... and this is why I am so happy United Airlines doesn't do kidney transplants nor nose jobs. The results would be hideous.

At Denver and Newark I tried to change these flights to get there sooner on any Star Alliance airline - and you get a different story from every single employee. The Premium Economy seats too are strange, the newer 737 from Denver to Newark has DirectTV, but you have to pay to use it! No free TV, no free Movies... CHEAP CHEAP!

So when I went to bed at 1am last night, I hated United with a passion. 17 hours to get to a lousy hotel in Jersey. It's like I am in the airline's version of Purgatory.

This morning, it is 6AM, I am going to go in the shower, wear the same clothes - since mine are buried in the airport bowels somewhere - and fly off at 10:21 AM to Shanghai. I still hate United, but I have no option now for any other route getting me to Shanghai quicker so I have to bite the bullet.

I am telling myself I am still so lucky in life - United didn't turn me into a slave of Steven Harper or the Capitalist machine... oh hang on.... oh whatever, another 20 hours or so and I will have made it to China... Or Barbados, we'll see ;)

Still in Canada:

A plane skidded off the runway this morning, a cargo plane, so no screaming passengers, but it closed the runway, then heavy fog slowed things down more.

They ended up cancelling the Chicago flight… so now my plans are done, after 2.5 hours of rebooking fun (most AC craft are full because of the stupid Stanley Cup) - I am staying on United (despite preferring the switch) and am going to New York via. Denver, then up over the pole still to Shanghai - no Hong Kong, no 15.5 hours… phew.

This one is a 777 and it goes closer to the pole! Only 14.25 hours...lol But it does end in Shanghai, no more connecting flight in China.

So 3:30pm departure for Denver now… lol Then Newark, then Shanghai...  life is an adventure. Again. Maybe I should call them up and get an extra day added... make up for the chunk of the 25th I am losing...  :(

Live flight status:  Nov 24th 10:25 AM  ~ 1:40 PM Nov 25 (Central Standard)

November 24th take off time for this one!

CHINA BOUND

November 23rd 2012:

Via Chicago, Hong Kong (over the Arctic) and on to Shanghai.

Oh sure, this flight leaves the US almost every day, but with enough fuel for 15.5 hours non stop flying time (Chicago-Hong Kong), it's a very long roll for take off - extra nail biting may be required...

UA895 is one of the longest commercial flights - and almost the heaviest - a 747 burns up far more fuel than an A380 mile for mile, despite being physically smaller, yet cramming almost as many earthlings in. I will be in economy of course, with the rest of the flying poor, so think of chickens on a Mexican bus and you will have the ambiance down perfectly. A 747 is noisier than a clapped out Latino bus... the food is crappier, it holds even more people with their over sized bags, there's no USB for my iPod... think of the radiation exposure...

OH MY GAWD GET ME OFF THIS RUSTING ANTIQUE!

Come back and see what Shanghai has to offer Dave as he tries to get as much in as he can. It is a long weekend that grew into a week - it's SHANGHAI WEEK!

GEEK STUFF:

The most direct route from Chicago is shown on the GCR map above, note the orientation, it's looking down from the pole... the path varies according to the weather and the wind - and I am hoping for a slight deviation. We will see how it works out :) - I want to go over the pole. This isn't the longest non-stop I have been on (the now defunct Bangkok to Los Angeles run at 16 hours is my personal record) - but I will be sleeping for most of it, so I guess it's academic :)

Flight plan time can vary by up to an hour ~ scheduled 15.25 hours. Speed, altitude, computed position, it's all here! How exciting! You can watch a lousy graphic move in 'real time' ;)

These posts will be submitted via email as the Great Firewall of China has blocked direct access to Blogger. You will have to forgive typos as I won't be able to see the site. Apparently the Chinese hate Google as much as Apple. You don't have to wear your Shanghai Tang Mao Suit to read along, but you can if you want. I am judgemental - but I won't be able to see you!

Under the circumstances, Little Red Books are optional.

See you soon.
